Tensions rise over funeral plans as late former Zambian President rejects successor's presence

Date: Jun 12, 2025

Zambia's former President Edgar Lungu, who died last week at the age of 68, reportedly left instructions that his successor, President Hakainde Hichilema, should not be anywhere near his body.

This marks the latest development in an escalating feud over funeral plans following Lungu’s death in South Africa.

The government had planned to repatriate his body on Wednesday, but the arrangements were halted due to a dispute between Lungu's family, his political party the Patriotic Front (PF) and the state over mourning and funeral protocols.

Lungu and Hichilema were long-time political rivals, with Hichilema defeating Lungu in the 2021 general election after five unsuccessful presidential bids.

The PF has alleged that Lungu was effectively banned from international travel and that earlier access to overseas medical care could have saved his life. The Zambian government, which plans to grant Lungu a state funeral, has denied the allegations.
