SA Police Minister dismisses 'genocide' claims amid drop in carjackings

Date: May 23, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, has dismissed claims of a "genocide" taking place in the country.

This follows comments made by United States President Donald Trump, who alleged that white Afrikaner farmers were being persecuted in SA.

Mchunu clarified the matter during the release of the crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year, covering the period from January 1 to March 31 2025.

Among the key highlights, carjacking incidents have dropped by 15.1%, and robbery at non-residential premises is down by 23.4%. However, Portfolio Committee member on Police, Ian Cameron, raised concerns about house robberies.

“Carjacking is down by 15.1% and robbery at non-residential premises is at 23.4%. My worry is that house robbery at residential premises is only down by 0.4% maybe they should do more in that field,” he said.
