Chad’s former Prime Minister, opposition leader reportedly abducted

Date: May 16, 2025

Succes Masra, Chad’s former Prime Minister and head of the opposition Transformers party, is said to have been taken by security forces from his home earlier today.

A video shared on Facebook by Ndolembai Sade Njesada, the Vice President of Masra’s party, shows armed men in uniform leading Masra away from a residential building. Details about the incident are still unclear.

Masra has been a firm critic of the military junta led by President Mahamat Idriss Deby, who took power after his father, long-time leader Idriss Deby, died in 2021 during a visit to troops fighting rebels in the country’s north.

In an effort to ease political tensions, Masra was made Prime Minister in January 2024, just a few months before the presidential election that Mahamat Idriss Deby won.

More information is expected as the situation unfolds.
