The group, marching under the umbrella of the Tshivhase Traditional Council, say their ancestors were buried on the land where the university now stands. Spokesperson for the group, Harry Masindi says over 60 graves are located at the institution.
"The Marude-Mufhandani community have more than 65 graves inside the University of Venda. And some of the graves now they are under the library and roads. And other buildings are on top of the graves. When the community was crying, no one assisted them. Up until we approached the Heritage Resource Agency, who came in and issued two orders to stop and after they stopped them, they continued," Masindi said.
