SA SASSA card replacement process poorly executed: Minister

Date: Feb 19, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, has admitted that the replacement of gold SA Social Security Agency (SASSA) cards with black Postbank cards has not been well executed.

Malatsi made the remarks while addressing a joint sitting of Parliament's Social Development and Communications and Digital Technologies committees. The meeting, which included senior officials from the SASSA and Postbank, sought to address delays in the card replacement process.

Postbank is responsible for facilitating the card swop, but concerns have been raised about the slow pace of implementation.

Malatsi acknowledged the challenges, “The acknowledgement that the project hasn’t rolled out as well as it should have been. Secondly, there is nothing to be defensive about because the reality of the situation we are in is simply because there are genuine concerns across the board.”

Malatsi’s comments come amid mounting frustrations from grant recipients struggling to access their funds due to the delays in receiving the new cards.
