The announcement was made on Tuesday during the opening of the Second African Forum on Urban Forests (AFUF) in Bryanston, Johannesburg.
The forum, a four-day landmark event, has brought together global leaders, policymakers, environmental experts, community organisations, and key stakeholders. The goal is to highlight the significance of urban forests in fostering resilient, sustainable, and inclusive cities across Africa.
Swarts emphasised the crucial role trees play in improving urban environments, from mitigating climate change to enhancing the quality of life for urban residents.
"This initiative is not just about planting trees; it is about investing in the future of our cities, making them greener and more sustainable for generations to come," Swarts stated.
