Drug trafficking suspect hospitalised after arrest at SA airport

Date: Oct 7, 2024

A 43-year-old Paraguayan national was taken into emergency medical care due to health complications arising after his arrest at OR Tambo International Airport over the weekend.

The man, suspected of drug trafficking, is believed to have ingested 20 capsules containing cocaine. Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, South Africa's (SA) Deputy National Commissioner, confirmed the incident, which occurred shortly after the suspect's apprehension on Sunday.

The suspect had arrived from São Paulo, Brazil, and was detained by vigilant police officers as part of the SA Police Service's escalated anti-drug trafficking operations.

Since the intensification of these efforts in August, he marks the 14th individual to be arrested in connection with drug smuggling through one of the country's busiest international gateways.

This case highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in SA and the continuous vigilance required by law enforcement agencies to combat this global issue.
