SA party threatens to approach highest court to fight acting Police Minister appointment

Date: Jul 15, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) uMkhonto weSizwe Party says it will directly approach the Constitutional Court to challenge the appointment of Firoz Cachalia as the acting Minister of Police

The party says President Cyril Ramaphosa violated the Constitution by appointing Cachalia to the position. It says the Constitution does not allow for two ministers to serve under any portfolio. The party also says it rejects the establishment of a commission of inquiry to probe serious safety and security concerns, which among others implicated Mchunu.

It says the nature and gravity of these allegations cannot be solved by a commission. The party was briefing the media in Parliament, where it’s Parliamentary Leader, Dr John Hlophe said the formation of the commission is a concern.

“One of the fundamental problems we have with the commission of inquiry is, following the judicial commission of inquiry, which is going to be headed by a judge, there are serious allegations of corruption in the judiciary which have been made by Mkhwanazi. The judiciary is called upon to investigate itself. What are the chances that the judge will admit to corruption in the judiciary?," Hlophe said.
