Military camp raid in SA exposes flaws in national security

Date: Jul 27, 2024

In a startling revelation, a retired South African (SA) Army general, Maomela "Mojo" Motau, has criticised the nation's crime intelligence and border security systems following the discovery of an unauthorised military camp in Mpumalanga.

The camp, which was raided by police, resulted in the arrest of nearly a hundred Libyan nationals.

The facility, located in White River, was initially established as a security training camp but was reportedly being used for military training activities.

General Motau expressed concern over the lapse in security that allowed the camp to operate undetected, emphasising that the police should have been aware of its existence much earlier.

This incident has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of SA intelligence and border security measures.
