This response comes after a report claimed that the Air Force currently has only two operational fighter jets, one helicopter, and three trainer jets. The report also noted that more than 330 aircraft, including fighter jets, helicopters, and rescue planes, have remained inactive for years, awaiting repairs.
SANDF Spokesperson Sphiwe Dlamini dismissed the report as outdated, emphasising ongoing improvements. "The article paints a grim picture which, in our view, is not the case. In as much as we acknowledge the challenges that we've had or are still having due to a number of reasons, the information that you've seen in the press is a bit old," Dlamini stated. He added, "There has been improvement in the work that we've been doing to get the serviceability of the aircraft."
The SANDF has faced recent criticism, particularly after the loss of 14 soldiers in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This tragedy has intensified public scrutiny of the military's readiness and resource management.
