This category celebrates initiatives that go beyond words to deliver meaningful, sustainable change. Global Alliance's President and Chief Executive Officer, Justin Green, praised Re. Bag. Re. Use for exemplifying the power of innovative public relations to address pressing global challenges by repurposing waste into functional products.
Channel Africa spoke to Regine Le Roux, Founder of Re. Bag. Re. Use, about the initiative's journey and impact. Le Roux shared, "I always joke it's a COVID-19 baby. Initially, it was a hobby of crocheting and knitting, which has always been one of my hobbies. During that horrendous time, many people faced financial difficulties and needed to borrow money. I thought, how can I help and make a difference to provide dignity to people and help them make a little extra pocket money without borrowing? It feels like I've linked my hobby of crocheting with experimenting with different materials."
Le Roux recalled how the project evolved: "I was experimenting one day with a bread bag because I remembered seeing ladies crocheting during their tea breaks many years ago, making the most beautiful items. It was such a pain to cut the plastic and then crochet, so I asked someone to help cut it while I experimented. In the blink of an eye, this hobby turned into a project. What started with me cutting and crocheting a little on my own now involves six ladies cutting and 15 ladies crocheting beautiful multifunctional products from empty bread bags. This not only provides a little extra pocket money but also keeps plastic from ending up in the environment."
The Re. Bag. Re. Use Initiative's success highlights the potential for creative solutions to address environmental and social challenges, making a positive impact on communities and the planet.
