Chamisa promises spaghetti roads, bullet trains in final rally address
Zimbabwe's opposition leader Nelson Chamisa vowed to usher in a new era of democracy and development as he addressed a huge crowd of supporters in Harare on Monday, ahead of the Presidential election this Wednesday.
Chamisa, who leads the Citizens for Coalition Change (CCC) party, is the main challenger to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is seeking a second term after taking over from Robert Mugabe in 2017.
The 40-year-old lawyer and Pastor told the cheering crowd at the Robert Mugabe Square, also known as Freedom Square, that he would transform Zimbabwe's economy and infrastructure, fight corruption and restore the United States Dollar as the official currency.
He said he would also introduce "spaghetti roads and bullet trains", "smart phones and smart agriculture" and "a new Zimbabwe that is open for business".
He thanked his supporters, mostly young people, for their loyalty and sacrifice, saying they had funded and driven his campaign without any foreign or regional backing.
He said he was confident of victory, despite allegations of vote-rigging and intimidation by the ruling party. "We are not afraid of anything. We are not afraid of the ballot. We are not afraid of the bullet. We are not afraid of the baton. We are not afraid of the beast.
“We are ready for anything. We are ready for everything," he said.
He urged his supporters to vote peacefully and protect their votes from being stolen.
He said he was only answerable to God and the people of Zimbabwe, whom he said would witness "the dawn of a new era" on Wednesday.
