The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) was signed into law on May 18, 2000 to encourage African countries to open their economies and build free trade markets.
The programme affords African producers an important competitive advantage in the US market, thereby enabling exports, encouraging investment in the region, boosting private sector activity and economic growth in the region.
According to South African government, "The 2023 AGOA Trade and Economic Cooperation Forum seeks to expand and deepen trade and investment relationships between the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It also encourages regional integration and further reaffirms Africa’s position as a capable economic partner for the world."
