Deputy Director-General in the Department of Mineral Resources and Petroleum, Ntokozo Nzimande, told delegates at the Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town that coal remains a vital mineral for SA’s energy mix. He stressed, however, that continued use of the resource does not equate to environmental neglect.
“Just because we continue to rely on coal doesn’t mean we’re doing so irresponsibly. There are efforts underway to improve how we manage and clean our coal usage,” said Nzimande.
His comments come at a time when the country is grappling with the dual challenge of securing a reliable electricity supply while working toward its climate commitments. SA remains heavily reliant on coal, which powers the majority of its electricity grid.
The Green Hydrogen Summit is a platform for government officials, industry leaders, and experts to discuss sustainable energy solutions, including the development of green hydrogen as part of the broader energy transition.
