This follows the Health Department's recent gazetting of a notice prohibiting the sale, manufacturing, and importation of such products.

The decision by the Health Ministry has drawn criticism from the cannabis and hemp industry, which warns that the regulations could result in significant job losses. In response, Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya assured that the Health Department would continue consultations before finalising the revised regulations.

"President Cyril Ramaphosa has affirmed his support for more stakeholder consultation and public participation on the formulation of new regulations that will limit health risks and the negative impact of foodstuffs containing cannabis and hemp, particularly on minors," Magwenya stated.

He added that Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi had briefed the President on concerns about unregulated imported foodstuffs containing cannabis and hemp flooding the SA market.

The ongoing consultations aim to strike a balance between safeguarding public health and addressing the concerns of the cannabis and hemp industry, as the government works towards a comprehensive regulatory framework.
