Cambodia reduces tariffs in bid to avoid US import tax

Date: Apr 6, 2025

In a move aimed at preventing a 49% import tax from the United States (US), Cambodia has decided to reduce its tariffs on US goods to just 5%.

This decision is part of a broader strategy to engage the US bin discussions and prevent the implementation of the new tariff measures.

The US has recently applied tariffs on imports from various nations, including a 31% tax on goods from South Africa. Cambodia, which has seen significant economic growth driven by its manufacturing sector, is hoping that this reduction will encourage the US to reconsider its stance.

Over the past few years, Cambodia's economic expansion has largely been supported by its growing manufacturing industry, with Chinese factory owners relocating some of their production to the country due to its low labour costs. However, the new US tariff system is believed to be targeting these supply chains, with some of the highest taxes imposed on Cambodian imports.
