SA power utility to scale down maintenance for winter demand: Ramokgopa

Date: Apr 12, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, says Eskom will reduce its scheduled maintenance during winter to meet higher electricity demand.

In a written reply to Parliament, Ramokgopa explained that planned maintenance is typically scaled back in winter to ensure maximum capacity, particularly during peak morning and evening hours.

He noted that Eskom will also rely on emergency reserves, including diesel and pumped storage, to manage stress on the grid during high-demand periods.

Eskom is in the final stages of preparing its official Winter Outlook, which will detail the country’s supply readiness, anticipated electricity needs, and mitigation strategies for the 2025 winter period.
