SA stresses mutual benefits in US trade relations amid tariff concerns

Date: Apr 4, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Department of Trade, Industry and Competition has reaffirmed the mutual benefits of trade relations between SA and the United States (US).

This is despite the recent imposition of 30% tariffs on SA imports, including the automobile industry, by US President Donald Trump's administration.

On Friday, Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau and Minister of International Relations Ronald Lamola are set to brief the media on Pretoria's response to these developments.

Tau's Spokesperson, Yamkela Fanisi, emphasised the importance of continued dialogue with the US, stating, "We will continue to engage with the US on this matter."

Fanisi also highlighted the need for SA to adapt to the evolving geopolitical landscape.

"The geopolitical environment is forcing us to think outside the box and also try to think more broadly. It’s going to be critical for SA to look at this diversification strategy and intensify it. But it’s going to be very important for us to make the Africa Free Trade Agreement work so that we can actually take advantage and participate in regional trade," she said.
