SA Education Support Forum equips youth for green energy careers

Date: Feb 18, 2025

The Education Support Forum (ESF), a South African (SA) non-profit organisation backed by the Jobs Fund and Sasol, is championing green energy initiatives to accelerate the transition to renewable energy.

The initiative focuses on equipping young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with the skills needed to thrive in Africa’s burgeoning green economy.

Khutso Bapela, Project Manager at the ESF, spoke to Channel Africa on Tuesday about the organisation’s commitment to fostering skills development in renewable energy.

“We have a mission to empower individuals, particularly the youth, through skills training and to facilitate their transition into sustainable careers in Africa’s green economy,” Bapela said.

“The projects we are running in renewable energy are supported and funded by the Jobs Fund and Sasol.”

The initiative was born out of a need to bridge the gap in SA’s energy sector, especially following the country’s struggles with load shedding.

Bapela noted that while alternative energy solutions were introduced, participation from Black youth and those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds was limited.

“We saw that while renewable energy solutions were emerging, our youth were not actively involved in the industry. They were more consumers rather than contributors,” he explained.

“Our programme is designed to change that by equipping young people with the skills to become solar installers and solar technicians.”

The programme operates across four provinces, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, and Mpumalanga, reaching out to young people with an electrical background. The training provides them with the necessary expertise to participate in the renewable energy sector.

Launched in March 2024, the project is set to run until March 2026, with a strong focus on job security.

“Our ultimate goal is to create sustainable employment for young people,” Bapela stated.

“Permanent job placements in the renewable energy sector will ensure they have stable incomes rather than moving from one temporary job to another.”

Recognising the rising demand for skilled workers in the renewable energy sector, the ESF aims to provide career development resources and direct job placements to individuals eager to enter the industry.
