The park, known for its rich biodiversity and critical conservation value, now faces the threat of industrial exploitation as Kropz, a mining company owned by African Rainbow Capital (ARC), seeks approval to mine within its protected borders.
The move has sparked alarm among conservationists. Dr Morne du Plessis, Chief Executive Officer of WWF SA, confirmed the organisation’s opposition to the proposal during an interview with Channel Africa on Wednesday.
“We are deeply concerned about the potential environmental and ecological damage this mine could cause. Mining has no place within a national park,” he said.
West Coast National Park is home to sensitive ecosystems, including vital wetlands and coastal habitats, and is a key area for migratory birds and other wildlife. The introduction of mining activities could irreversibly damage these environments, undermine conservation efforts, and threaten the livelihoods of communities dependent on eco-tourism.
“This isn’t just about protecting nature for its own sake,” Du Plessis said.
“It’s about safeguarding a national treasure that provides environmental services, supports tourism, and contributes to the local economy.”
