The four-day gathering, which brings together agricultural leaders and policymakers from across the G20, is focusing on urgent global issues such as climate change, food security, and innovation in sustainable farming systems. The meeting also includes invited countries, international bodies, and prominent African research institutions.
Despite its role in the G20 Troika, alongside Brazil and SA which holds this year’s Presidency, the US has not sent a delegation to the meeting. No official reason has been given for the absence.
“We haven’t received an explanation for the US’s non-participation,” said Mooketsa Ramasodi, Director-General of SA’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. “What we do have, however, is a full house of G20 members, apart from the US. We’re also joined by invited countries, international organisations, and African research bodies such as FARA and CORAF, all working towards a common goal, to strengthen food security and drive agricultural advancement.”
The MACS meeting is among several key lead-up events ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, set to take place in November.
