Calls mount for SA government to prioritise unemployment crisis

Date: Jul 5, 2025

Calls are growing for the South African (SA) government to make addressing the country’s high unemployment rate a top priority.

This comes as the inaugural National Dialogue Outreach Session gets underway at North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus in the North West Province.

The university, in collaboration with the Strategic Dialogue Group and the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, is hosting discussions in preparation for next month’s National Dialogue.

Political analyst Thabang Motswaledi says the National Dialogue must deliver tangible solutions to SA’s persistent unemployment crisis.

“There needs to be various strategies that are going to combat this issue from a social, economic, as well as other social issues, that would be able to address these social injustices, not just to look at it as a single issue. Because by looking at it in isolation, we risk solving one crisis while others persist,” he said.

“So, I think it must be seen as a multi-phased issue that addresses all the challenges we face in the province. Only then can we move forward meaningfully in resolving this crisis,” Motswaledi added.
