SARS warns consumers to ensure they are charged 15% VAT

Date: Apr 28, 2025

South African Revenue Service (SARS) Commissioner Edward Kieswetter has urged consumers to be vigilant at the point of sale to ensure that they are charged 15% Value-Added Tax (VAT) and to engage their stores should they be charged 15.5%.

This comes after the Western Cape High Court set aside the VAT increase and the fiscal framework in favour of the SA parties, Democratic Alliance ( DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Kieswetter says major retailers have informed the tax authority that they will reverse the VAT increase on their systems to ensure that VAT remains at 15% at the point of sale.
