Mali to audit 25 years of public funds allocated to political parties

Date: Jun 21, 2025

Malian government has launched an audit into how political parties managed public funds they received over the past 25 years.

This follows a presidential decree issued in April that dissolved all political parties in the country.

The announcement was made by the President of the Accounts Section of the Supreme Court during a televised address. The audit will examine the use of state subsidies granted to political parties from July 2000 to May 2025.

According to the now-repealed Political Parties Charter of 18 August 2005, political parties were obligated to submit annual financial reports to the Supreme Court by March 31 each year. However, there are growing concerns that many parties failed to comply with this requirement.

So far, there has been no official response from former party leaders.

Political analyst Kassoum Coulibaly welcomed the move but raised questions about its timing.
“This audit is necessary and long overdue,” Coulibaly said. “But launching it after the dissolution of political parties raises suspicions about the true motives behind it. It could be seen as an attempt to discredit the political class entirely.”

Coulibaly added that the findings of the audit may significantly shape public perception of Mali’s political leadership, past and present.

The audit is expected to further deepen debate over transparency and governance in a country that has faced prolonged political instability since the 2020 coup.
