President Cyril Ramaphosa led a delegation that included businesspeople such as Johan Rupert to the United States (US) earlier this week. Rupert is reported to have told Musk that his company’s services were needed to help fight crime in SA.
Mashaba says they will oppose Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi’s gazetted proposed amendments to the triple-BEE policy in the ICT sector to accommodate Musk’s company.
“You know, for me as a Black South African, it deeply hurts me. Johan Rupert, who is not a member of the Cabinet, raised that we need Starlink in SA and within days, we see it really happening against our laws. We are prepared to change the country’s transformation laws to really accommodate this. I am concerned about the man behind Starlink, someone who deeply hates Black people, someone who is the biggest racist on earth, and someone who hates SA with a passion and the President and his coalition government are the first ones to accommodate. Coming out of that engagement is the sad moment, particularly for us as Black people.”
