Private sector showing appetite for rail investment: SA Minister

Date: May 13, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says government has received overwhelming responses from the private sector invited to invest in the country’s rail infrastructure.

In March, Creecy launched an online request for proposals from the private sector.

The minister delivered the keynote address at the 25th Africa Rail Conference in Sandton, Johannesburg. She says SA will produce a refined rail master plan before the end of the year.

“There is significant appetite, so much appetite and so much interest that we’ve had to agree to extend the time deadlines to the end of May. We were supposed to close everybody was supposed to submit at the end of April and we’ve had to extend until the end of May; we made a public announcement about that yesterday. This is going to be very important information that we’re going to get that will allow us to determine how we put out requests for proposals. So, this is not a bid process. It’s an information sharing process."
