SA Minister confirms $46 mln City Power debt written off by Eskom

Date: Jun 24, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Electricity Minister, Dr  Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, says $46 million has been written off from the $223 million debt that Johannesburg’s utility, City Power, owes to Eskom.

The remaining $177 million will be repaid over four years. The settlement follows a mediation process ordered by the court after a legal dispute over the payment.

Briefing the media in Johannesburg, Gauteng province, Ramokgopa said, "Eskom has conceded on the periods of load shedding, estimation charges, and penalties related to notifiable maximum demand. All of those have been removed, amounting to R830 million ($46 709 643). So, the original R3.2 billion ($180 122 million) debt is reduced by that R830 million ($46 709 643), this is Eskom’s concession."
