Only 10% of commercial farmers are black: SA Minister

Date: Jun 5, 2025

South African (SA) Ariculture Minister John Steenhuisen says the country should push for meaningful participation of black businesses in the agriculture sector.

He says it’s unacceptable that in the country’s 31-year democracy, only 10 percent of farmers are black.

Steenhuisen was among Cabinet Ministers who delivered an address at the Black Business Council summit in Kempton Park, East of Johannesburg.

“It’s obviously important that as the agriculture sector we work with as many stakeholders as possible to ensure growth and opportunities in the agriculture space. If we look at the participation, particularly of black farmers in the large-scale commercial agriculture, it pegs at around 10 percent on average and obviously we need to look at how we can address that imbalance that we have and obviously create and grow the empower more South Africans,” says Steenhuisen.
