‘Dropping of natural gas reserves put risks to both SA, Mozambique’

Date: May 7, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Electricity Minister, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says diminishing current natural gas reserves in Pande, Mozambique present SA with both risk and opportunities.

Ramokgopa was speaking at the natural gas symposium hosted by Wits Business School in Johannesburg, in the province of Gauteng.
SA will no longer be able to export natural gas from Mozambique from 2026.

Ramokgopa has urged SA citizens to work together to avoid the gas shortage.

"SA currently imports approximately 160 petajoules of natural gas per annum from Mozambique, representing more than 85% of our total consumption. The largest user consumes is around 125 petajoules annually, creating over 13 000 direct jobs and contributing approximately 5% of Gross Domestic Product.

Yet the pundit the money gas fields are projected to decline between 2026 and 2028. This anticipated gas lever is a significant threat to our economy and one that demands a coordinated and forward-looking response."
