The strike, which is supported by the South African Communist Party (SACP), Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA), and other affiliates, aims to draw attention to the country's soaring unemployment rates, widespread corruption, and the increasing cost of living.
BUSA Chief Executive Officer, Khulekani Mathe, highlighted the potential misuse of Section 77, which pertains to the certificate that sanctions the labour federation to carry out the strike.
According to Mathe, COSATU's reliance on a certificate issued four years ago under different economic circumstances circumvents the necessary dialogue and consensus among parties in the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) regarding each proposed strike.
Mathe advocates for a reform that would mandate a discussion and authorisation by Nedlac parties for every proposed strike, ensuring that current economic conditions are considered.
