SA poultry association expresses shock following Competition Commission's decision

Date: Feb 13, 2024

The South African Poultry Association has expressed shock following the Competition Commission's decision to probe allegations of anti-competitive practices in the poultry sector.

General Manager of the Broiler Organisation at the South African Poultry Association, Izaak Breitenbach says the commission should instead be looking at ways to support the industry especially after the challenges its faced recently.

“What we've now found lately is that while the industry is in distress,  having to contend with very high raw material prices, the impact of avian influenza, rebate that was given on import tariffs that will now cause the industry to compete with low priced imports and now the competition commissions investigation, all these are actually detractors from growing the local industry.

What we should do is support the local industry to actually achieve aims set out in the master plan.”
