Date: Dec 28, 2024

South Africa’s (SA) tourism and hospitality industry is warning of a wider economic impact on regional tourism due to violence in Mozambique over disputed polls.

By Nosipho Radebe

The sector is concerned about a potential long-term impact on tourist arrivals due to safety concerns and reduced revenue for tour operators.

Mozambique has been reeling from the worst election-related violence in decades.

Dozens of people are believed to have died in the protests following the country’s top court’s decision to uphold Frelimo’s victory in the election.

Spokesperson for the Southern African Tourism Services Association, Oupa Pilane says “Definitely tourism numbers are going to be affected, especially in Mozambique. Because one of the biggest source markets of Mozambique are South Africans, they make up to about 800 000 visitors per annum.”
