The briefing focused on operational updates and collaborative strategies to ensure seamless border management and security during the busy holiday season.
With South Africa's airports anticipating heavy passenger volumes, the leaders outlined measures to enhance efficiency and address potential challenges. Projections indicate that OR Tambo alone expects approximately 119 000 international passengers and 162 000 domestic travellers during the festive season.
Both organisations expressed confidence in their readiness to manage the anticipated surge in passenger traffic. Masiapato highlighted the deployment of additional personnel and technical support to address any operational disruptions.
Preparation for the peak season began in September, with contingency plans implemented to handle high volumes of travellers and unforeseen incidents.
Mpofu acknowledged past challenges, including fuel supply issues caused by a broken shaft in the jet fuel system. This mechanical failure disrupted fuel flow, leading to delays. However, engineers have since resolved the problem, replacing the damaged component to prevent recurrence.
On the BMA side, Masiapato addressed delays caused by an outdated biometric system inherited from the Department of Home Affairs. Network failures extended passenger processing times from the usual 10 minutes to over 30 minutes, causing frustration among travellers. To mitigate this, additional technicians have been stationed at ports of entry to resolve technical issues promptly and minimise disruptions.
In light of the expected congestion, passengers are urged to arrive at airports earlier than usual. For international flights, travellers should now plan to arrive three hours before departure, an increase from the previous two-hour recommendation. For domestic flights, the advised arrival time has been extended from one hour to two hours before departure.
OR Tambo International Airport, along with King Shaka and Cape Town International airports, plays a critical role in facilitating trade and tourism, particularly during the festive season. The briefing emphasised the collaborative efforts between BMA and ACSA to ensure smooth operations and enhance South Africa’s reputation as a global travel hub.
