SA Union to meet Sibanye-Stillwater after shaft incident traps 260 mine workers

Date: May 26, 2025

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in South Africa (SA) plans to meet Sibanye-Stillwater mine management soon.

This follows an incident at the mine on Thursday that led to 260 mineworkers being trapped underground.

All mine workers at Sibanye's Kloof 7 sub-shaft in the west of Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, were safely brought to the surface on Friday night.

The mining company says equipment failure caused debris to damage the main shaft, cutting off the workers exit route.

NUM’s National Chairperson for Health and Safety is Duncan Luvuno says, "Maybe just to give a background of what happened after almost 300 mineworkers at Kloof Mine were saved.

We agreed with the management that we’re going to prioritise a meeting, either on Monday or Tuesday, while the issue is still fresh so that we can be able to sit timeously around the table so that we can see how we can avoid this and also probe what happened so that it can be avoided. We’re still waiting for management to consult organised labour so that we can meet either Monday or Tuesday."
