The Southern African country has opened its power sector to private players, paving the way for partnerships focused on clean energy. Zimbabwe’s abundant sunshine and energy deficits have made solar an obvious area for growth.
“Coal has been the mainstay of Zimbabwe’s energy supply, but in some areas, it’s running low,” Development economist Dr Eddie Mahembe explained. “Solar presents a sustainable, scalable solution.”
The reforms also mirror similar developments in neighbouring South Africa, where energy liberalisation has allowed independent producers to feed power into the national grid.
With investor interest growing and government support in place, Zimbabwe’s solar ambitions could mark a turning point in the country’s efforts to stabilise its energy supply and support industrialisation.
