The figure, estimated at close to $40 million (around R740 million), has sparked public debate, but officials say no final decision has been made.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni told journalists that the suggested amount has not yet gone through the required government finance and budget review processes. She said the proposal is still subject to consideration by the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC), which is led by the Deputy President.
“Cabinet is aware of the financial pressures facing the country and has instructed the IMC to ensure that any funding allocated is handled with care and accountability,” she said.
While the cost remains under scrutiny, the minister urged citizens to take part in the national dialogue. She emphasised that the platform is meant to bring South Africans together to reflect on the country’s challenges and help shape its future.
The national dialogue is expected to include voices from across society, including community leaders, civil society, and the broader public.
