SA coastal provinces sign Mou on green hydrogen

Date: Oct 16, 2023

A tripartite agreement on green hydrogen will be signed on Monday by the South African provinces of Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Western Cape, according to Mlungisi Mvoko, the MEC for Finance and Economic Development of the Eastern Cape Province.

He says the agreement aims to establish cooperation and synergy among the provinces, which have great potential to become green hydrogen production hubs for both local and international markets.

The announcement comes after South Africa and Japan signed a deal to collaborate on decarbonising the South African economy. Mvoko made these remarks at a media briefing for the Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town on Sunday.

"We want to leverage our renewable energy resources and existing special economic and infrastructure to create a green hydrogen value chain that benefits the whole of South Africa and Southern Africa," Mvoko says.

"This is why the MOU on green hydrogen among the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Western Cape is a crucial step towards fostering cooperation among the renewable energy producing provinces."
