SA Communications Authority investigates allegations of unauthorised Starlink operations

Date: May 29, 2025

Icasa, the (Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (SA)) has launched an investigation into allegations that SpaceX may be offering Starlink services in the country without authorisation.

In a statement, the telecommunications regulator confirmed that it had formally engaged SpaceX, an internet provider operated by Elon Musk, to clarify the reported activities and is awaiting a response.

Icasa has urged members of the public and industry stakeholders who may have supporting evidence to submit it for further review.

The probe comes amid broader regulatory discussions on compliance requirements for international companies operating within SA’s information, communications and technology sector. Starlink has gained popularity for its satellite-based broadband services, particularly in regions with limited infrastructure for traditional internet connectivity.
