Africa's power challenges under spotlight at Enlit Africa 2025

Date: May 21, 2025

As South Africa (SA) hosts Enlit Africa 2025, the continent’s ongoing struggle with power shortages and unreliable energy infrastructure has taken centre stage.

Dr Manessah Alagbaoso, Executive Head of Business Ecosystems and Sustainability at Standard Bank SA, has highlighted Africa’s slower development and ageing infrastructure as key obstacles to addressing persistent power cuts.

Countries such as SA, Nigeria, Zambia, and Zimbabwe continue to grapple with meeting growing electricity demands, leading to frequent outages that hinder industrial productivity and daily life.

Speaking at the event, which has brought together over six thousand energy and water experts, Alagbaoso acknowledged the efforts of African governments to tackle these challenges despite limited resources.

"The reality of Africa is that today, entire regions are without power. The continent cannot develop without stable, sustainable energy," he stated.

"For so long, we have seen the impact of unreliable electricity on Africa’s development. This is now a top priority for all African countries, and I do believe they are paying the necessary attention to it within the resources they have and can mobilise," he said.

Enlit Africa serves as a crucial platform for policymakers, industry leaders, and technical experts to discuss potential solutions to Africa’s energy crisis.
