SA sees progress in curbing illegal mining

A 42-year-old man has been arrested during an anti-illegal mining operation in the Phomolong informal settlement near Welkom in the Free State province in South Africa.

Police say they recovered suspected gold-bearing material weighing 15 kilograms, gold processing equipment and mercury. The suspect is expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon.

In a separate incident, four suspects have been arrested in Vierfontein for attempting to smuggle food intended for illegal miners at Kopanong mine.

The goods include powdered energy drinks, soya mince, bread, biltong and peanuts. The suspects, who include two women, are also expected to appear in court soon.
