SA President concerned about McKinsey’s appointment as B20 partner

Date: Dec 16, 2024

The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has noted with concern the recent appointment of McKinsey as a supporting partner to the B20, the business engagement group.

McKinsey meets on the sidelines of the G20 and co-ordinates the participation of business.

Ramaphosa is also concerned about the appointment of Bain to the Project Management Office of the Energy Council of South Africa.

The Presidency says in a statement that the appointments do not contribute to public trust and promotion of good governance, given the role of the two firms in state capture and corruption.

The Presidency has called on business to reconsider its position and to appoint what it says would be more suitable partners.

Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenaya says, “Whilst the presidency or government has no control over the B20 processes it does not endorse the appointment of McKinsey in this regard. Similarly the presidency does not condone the inclusion Bain in supporting the activites of Necom.”
