South Africa’s unemployment rate stands at 32.9%.
During the Opening of Parliament, President Cyril Ramaphosa said driving inclusive growth and job creation was the priority of the Government of National Unity (GNU) for the next five years.
Valodia says Ramaphosa has a point.
“I think what the President said is true. The number of employed people has gone up and government has created some employment opportunities but it’s also true that unemployment has been rising at the same time. The type of economic growth that we’ve had has not been able to generate sufficient employment opportunities that are new. So, what we require is a different sort of a growth path that will create sufficient employment opportunities.”
