South Africans explore immigration options as policies shift

Date: Mar 6, 2025

As South Africa (SA) navigates its political landscape, including recent land expropriation laws, many citizens are considering opportunities abroad.

The evolving discourse around immigration, particularly with comments from the United States (US), has sparked a growing interest in relocating.

Immigration consultant Nicholas Avramis of Beaver Immigration shared his insights on the issue, offering crucial advice for South Africans contemplating their futures outside the country.

"When making an asylum claim, it's essential to prove a well-founded fear of persecution or harm, whether through torture or cruelty," explained Avramis. "Both SA and Canada are signatories to the 1951 Refugee Convention, but SA has not fully ratified it, meaning international procedures govern the process."

The growing interest in seeking refuge in the US has raised concern due to the lack of clarity surrounding new policies. According to Avramis, asylum applications in the US may lead to unintended long-term consequences. "Once you make an asylum claim, it follows you for life. When applying for visas to other countries, like Canada or Australia, you'll have to disclose any past asylum applications, which can significantly hinder your chances of being granted entry," he said.

As American policies remain unpredictable, Avramis stresses that Canada's immigration system remains more stable. "Canada’s approach is grounded in international law, offering a clear and structured process for skilled workers," he noted. "Their system actively seeks professionals from various sectors, including healthcare, education, and trades, making it an attractive destination for qualified individuals."

SA doctors are increasingly eyeing Canada as a destination, given the recognition of their qualifications. Avramis highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the demand for healthcare professionals. "There are now thousands of South African medical professionals in Canada, and the number continues to grow," he said.

With immigration policies shifting rapidly, Avramis encourages South Africans to carefully evaluate their options. "It's vital to thoroughly understand the long-term impact of your decisions, especially when it comes to asylum claims and visa applications," he concluded.
