The process, known as "dual illumination," which involves the simultaneous operation of both analogue and digital TV signals, is reportedly underfunded.
With the December 31 2024 deadline looming, Solly Malatsihas expressed concerns that the allocated funds are insufficient to meet the analogue switch-off date. Since 2014, the government has invested approximately $127 million in dual illumination, but the current financial year has seen no further allocation from the National Treasury.
Furthermore, content delivery companies such as Sentech and the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa have not committed additional funds.
Malatsi highlighted the fiscal strain, stating, "The big dilemma we face is covering the costs of dual illumination. At present, there is no financial provision for this. If we consider extending the deadline, we must discuss new funding sources to cover these costs."
