ZCC Easter pilgrimage provides tourism boom for SA Limpopo province

Date: Apr 20, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Limpopo province's Tourism Agency (LTA) says the number of tourists visiting the province this weekend has surpassed previous Easter weekends.

This is due to the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) holding its first pilgrimage in Moria outside Polokwane following a five-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Visitors are also attending the St. Engenas Zion Christian Church’s Easter pilgrimage, also in Moria.

The St. Engenas ZCC resumed mass gatherings in 2024. LTA Chief Executive Officer, Moses Ngobeni, says around 2 million visitors are in Limpopo for the Easter weekend.

Ngobeni says locals are reaping financial benefits from the increase in tourism in the province.

“Both the township and the village accommodate people who are selling on the road. A lot of people are coming to the church; we are in a higher LSM and able to look up some additions. In the evening, people go and rest in the hotel.”
