'Irregulaties' detected in allowances of SA defence members deployed in DRC

Date: May 16, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Democratic Alliance (DA) has urged Defence Minister Angie Motshekga to provide clarity on the allowances allocated to South African National Defence Force (SANDF) personnel.

The party wants details on how these funds are being distributed to troops serving in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a statement released yesterday, Nicholas Gotell, the DA’s representative on Security and Justice in the National Council of Provinces, highlighted concerns over inconsistencies in the payment of troop allowances. He warned that these irregularities raise important questions about transparency and accountability within the defence department.

This call for explanation comes in the wake of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s revised budget speech delivered on March 12, 2025, where he announced an allocation of over $275 million aimed at supporting the SANDF’s peacekeeping efforts in the DRC. Gotell noted that these funds are intended to cover operational costs, including the allowances for deployed soldiers.

The DA is pressing the Ministry of Defence to provide a clear account of how the funds are managed and distributed, ensuring that troops on the ground receive the support they are owed.
