Visa barriers undermine SA-Nigeria trade ambitions: Business leaders

Date: May 1, 2025

Visa restrictions and policy bottlenecks between South Africa (SA) and Nigeria came under sharp scrutiny at the SA-Nigeria Private Sector Engagement Session held in Johannesburg this week.

Delegates warned that unresolved visa challenges are undermining trade and investment opportunities between Africa’s two largest economies.

The session, hosted by SA's Department of Trade, Industry and Competition in collaboration with MTN Group, formed part of broader efforts to deepen bilateral economic ties and enhance intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Minister Ebrahim Patel led the discussions, describing the event as “an important milestone in the broader vision of a more integrated and competitive African economy.”

While the agenda included expanding market access and fostering industrial development, the focus quickly shifted to the visa challenges affecting cross-border business operations.

Delegates, including private sector leaders operating between SA and Nigeria, expressed frustration with restrictive travel policies, describing them as a major hurdle to achieving meaningful economic integration.

Dianna Games, Chief Executive Officer of the SA-Nigeria Business Chamber, highlighted the need for formalised public-private dialogue. “You cannot assume government engagement will just happen,” she said. “That’s why initiatives like the Joint Ministerial Advisory Council on Industry, Trade and Investment are critical.”

John Bosco Arends, the Chairperson of the Chartered CIO Council, emphasised the importance of digital collaboration, noting that the session laid the groundwork for a digital trade corridor to facilitate safer and more efficient business exchanges between the two nations.

Delegates concluded that meaningful visa reform is not just a diplomatic issue but an economic imperative for Africa’s future.
