SA President heads to Washington to try ease strained bilateral relations

Date: May 19, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to arrive in the United States (US) on Monday for a high-stakes State visit with his American counterpart, Donald Trump.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of heightened diplomatic tensions following Trump’s controversial Executive Order granting refugee status to White Afrikaners on allegations of targeted attacks in SA.

The visit is expected to be a defining moment in the evolving relationship between the two nations, with both leaders keen to assert their positions while maintaining a semblance of diplomatic decorum.

At the heart of the discussions will be the repercussions of Trump’s decision, which Pretoria has condemned as an unnecessary interference in domestic affairs. The SA government has firmly rejected claims that White Afrikaners face systemic persecution, arguing instead that such narratives undermine national reconciliation efforts.

While policy disputes have tested bilateral ties in recent months, the televised meeting could prove to be a gripping diplomatic encounter. The leaders will navigate complex political terrain in front of senior aides and a press corps eager to probe their stances on trade, security, and human rights. Every nod, frown, and shift in posture will be scrutinised, not just for policy signals but for hints of a deeper geopolitical shift.
