SA industrial sector grapples with declining production

Date: Apr 16, 2025

The South African (SA) industrial sector is facing significant challenges as both mining and manufacturing production continue to falter.

Statistics SA has revealed steep declines in output, with mining production down by 9.6% year-on-year in February and manufacturing experiencing a 3.2% drop over the same period.

Experts have expressed concerns about the impact these figures could have on the country's economic outlook.

Hugo Pienaar, Chief Economist at the Mining Council of SA, painted a grim picture.

“The figures for real mining production indicate a tough start to 2025, with nine out of 12 mining subcategories showing month-on-month output declines for February. As a result, total seasonally adjusted mining production declined by a steep 4.4% on a month-on-month basis,” Pienaar explained.
