The Western Cape High Court is scheduled to hear the EFF’s application today, just hours before the increase is due to take effect. The new levy will raise petrol prices by 16 cents per litre and diesel by 15 cents per litre from tomorrow.
PAPPPI’s National Convener, Visvin Reddy, has strongly criticised the country’s fuel pricing structure, calling it fundamentally flawed and unfair to consumers.
“While the fuel levy increase is concerning, it is merely a symptom of deeper systemic issues in SA,” Reddy said.
“The fuel pricing structure in SA is actually criminal. The current pricing model disproportionately burdens consumers with taxes and levies, comprising a significant portion of the pump price. You're paying over 40%, and with the latest increase, it's going to go closer to 50% that’s going to the government.”
Reddy and his organisation argue that the current system requires urgent reform, as it continues to place a heavy financial burden on already struggling SA households.
